Plants change slowly enough that a single photo rarely tells you anything — the value is almost entirely in the comparison, which means consistency matters more here than almost anywhere else.
Same light, same time of day
Plants respond visibly to light, so photographing at a consistent time of day (and ideally consistent light conditions) keeps that variable from being mistaken for actual growth.
Frame wide enough to include context
Including the pot, a nearby object, or a consistent background gives you a scale reference that a tightly cropped photo loses — useful for noticing growth you might otherwise miss.

A cutting's journey from clipping to established plant is often the most rewarding one to look back on — frequent early photos (it changes fastest right after cutting) tapering to less frequent ones once it's established.
